Voter Eligibility Error in New Jersey Sparks Debate Over SAVE America Act

2 weeks ago 0

Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey argues that recent voter eligibility errors in the state do not warrant passing President Donald Trump’s SAVE America Act. He insists the issue is unrelated to federal voter ID requirements.

Noncitizens Mistakenly Eligible to Vote

Approximately 6,600 noncitizens were found eligible to vote in New Jersey due to a software error in the state’s Motor Vehicle System. This led to their removal from voter rolls for the 2024 presidential election.

Opposition to the SAVE America Act

Booker and other Democrats oppose the SAVE America Act, viewing it as a means to suppress voter turnout. He argues that the act would not have prevented clerical errors like those in New Jersey, Texas, and Oregon.

Investigation Underway

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has initiated an investigation to understand the cause of the eligibility error. She has taken immediate action to remove noncitizens from voter rolls.

Democratic Concerns

Booker, alongside other Democrats, expresses concerns that the SAVE America Act would prevent millions of Americans from voting by requiring in-person citizenship documentation. They argue that election management should remain at the state level.

Lack of National Standards

Currently, no national standard exists for identifying similar errors in voting systems. This absence makes it difficult to gauge the full scope of the issue.

Senator Booker emphasizes the need to address New Jersey’s problems without advancing policies that could harm voters nationwide.
