New research indicates that a person’s waist size could be a more significant indicator of heart health than their body weight. A study suggests that waist measurements can uncover potential cardiovascular risks that the Body Mass Index (BMI) might overlook.
Researchers from the Cross-Cohort Collaboration investigated data from about 260,000 adults across 15 long-term health studies. The participants were monitored for around 20 years. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that individuals classified as having a normal weight based on BMI might still have excessive fat around the midsection.
Among those with normal or overweight BMI, larger waist sizes or higher waist-to-hip ratios were linked to a 15% to 50% increased risk of various heart-related issues and mortality during the study’s duration.
BMI vs. Waist Size
The results highlight that evaluating weight distribution might offer a more comprehensive understanding of heart health than BMI alone. According to Erin Palinski-Wade, a registered dietitian and author, “BMI only reflects weight in relation to height and doesn’t indicate fat distribution, which is crucial.”
Palinski-Wade, who did not participate in the study, explained that abdominal fat could lead to different health problems compared to fat located elsewhere. “Visceral fat, situated around abdominal organs, actively contributes to inflammation, insulin resistance, and artery damage, unlike subcutaneous fat found under the skin elsewhere,” she noted.
Significance of Fat Location
Palinski-Wade emphasized that BMI alone may not accurately reflect an individual’s heart health. “Fat location may be more crucial than simply the amount present,” she stated. Fat located deep in the abdomen can promote inflammation, disrupt insulin function, and damage blood vessels.
During the study, researchers assessed health outcomes like heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular-related deaths.
Study Limitations
The research did have certain limitations. It lacked data on participants’ physical activities, diets, and genetic obesity risks, all of which could influence cardiovascular health. Furthermore, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio were measured only once, making it challenging to evaluate the impact of changes over time on heart disease risk.
