Washington Commanders fans faced disappointment on Monday after a confusing end to their game against the New York Giants which concluded in a tie. The game left many bewildered, particularly due to Jayden Daniels’ overtime mishap. Daniels ran down the clock, seemingly forgetting he lacked timeouts and enough minutes to set up a potential game-winning field goal.
This situation was worsened by the scrutiny from Washington’s owners. Notably, the famous Magic Johnson, who holds a roughly 4% stake in Josh Harris’ $6.05 billion acquisition of the franchise, commented on the loss on social media. Johnson, generally reserved in his criticisms online, expressed his discontent over how the game unfolded in Landover, Maryland.
“I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants. All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!”
At that moment, Johnson represented the sentiments of the Commanders’ fan base. During the game, the team led 27-13 after Daniels’ 26-yard touchdown run with 11:05 remaining. However, Giants quarterback Jameis Winston achieved two touchdowns, leveling the score at 27-27.
Magic Johnson, introduced as a new owner during a press event on July 21, 2023, at FedEx Field, voiced his frustrations on social media, symbolizing the fans’ overall exasperation.
A different outcome might have unfolded if Giants rookie kicker Dominic Zvada had managed to execute at least one of his three missed field goals. Nonetheless, Commanders’ head coach, Dan Quinn, accepted responsibility for the final game sequence error.
“The sequencing of that does not fall on Daniels,” Quinn stated. “It’s an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don’t need to gain more yards.”
As the Commanders fell to a record of 1-3-1 for the season, the aftermath of the game brought frustration and bewilderment to fans and owners alike.
