Washington Democrat Faces Backlash Over LGBTQ+ Comment and Strategy

Melissa Chaudhry, a Washington state Democrat, is under scrutiny from her own party as she runs against longtime Congress member Adam Smith in Washington’s 9th Congressional District. The criticism arose after Chaudhry was reported to have omitted LGBTQ+ rights from her campaign website, citing concerns about Muslim voters’ reactions. Seattle Red initially reported this development, highlighting a growing discontent among Democratic groups considering Chaudhry’s comments made during an interview with The Stranger.

The Washington State Stonewall Democrats expressed their concerns, urging a reevaluation of endorsements for Chaudhry. Andrew Ashiofu, chair of the organization, criticized Chaudhry for not aligning with core Democratic values, emphasizing the need for transparency when discussing LGBTQ+ rights. He stated that concealment undermines the integrity of the endorsement process and called for organizations to revisit their support for Chaudhry.

Her comments are disqualifying because they reveal a deliberate choice to hide her positions on LGBTQ+ rights while actively seeking Democratic endorsements.

Chaudhry responded to the criticism in a post, asserting her lifelong support for LGBTQ+ equality, motivated by personal experiences. Her sibling is part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and she helped establish her high school’s Gay Straight Alliance, among other personal connections.
