Week 5 Football Highlights: Playoff Contenders and Surprising Performances

1 week ago 0

We have reached the midpoint of the regular season. In Week 5, Providence’s undefeated streak ended with a 17-7 loss to Nazareth. This marked their first game after parting ways with head coach Tyler Plantz. Meanwhile, Oak Lawn and Lincoln-Way East maintained their perfect records. Both teams were led by standout performances from Jayden Schlosser and Jayden Cawthon.

Postseason Prospects

As we reach Week 5, the focus shifts to the postseason race. Expanded playoffs have allowed more teams to compete. Some teams are breaking long playoff droughts. Leo (3-2) aims for its first playoff since 2013, Bloom (3-2) since 2017, and Thornton (3-2) since 2019. Marian Catholic (2-3) can qualify for its first playoff since 2019 with a win over St. Viator (0-5).

These teams are not just sneaking in with a last-minute win. They are either already in or close after Week 5. All are aiming for a 5-4 record, the previous benchmark for qualification. Looking at the larger picture, aside from eight teams, all Southland teams appear on track for playoffs. Among the teams facing challenges are De La Salle, Bremen, Eisenhower, Argo, and Thornridge. Let’s focus on the remaining three.

Challengers to Watch

Richards’ Eric Jacobs was spotted in action against Homewood-Flossmoor. St. Laurence (1-4) needs a critical Week 7 win over Marmion (2-3) and may seek a victory against DePaul Prep (3-2) in Week 9. Despite a tough schedule, prospects for Rich Township look promising after a decisive 41-0 win over Bloom. Ortez Johnson’s exceptional performance makes them a strong contender. Stagg (1-4) has not made playoffs since 2005. They need a win against Thornridge to continue their journey. However, they will face significant challenges in their last three games without a major upset.

If you’re not among those fighting for a spot, prepare for postseason excitement.

The Battle for Byes

As numerous teams gear up for playoffs, the focus shifts to securing an opening-round bye. Achieving seven wins generally ensures a bye, while teams with six wins and strong opponent records might also qualify. Lincoln-Way East (5-0), Oak Lawn (5-0), Mount Carmel (4-1), and Morgan Park (4-1) are well-placed for byes. Meanwhile, T.F. North and Evergreen Park, both at 4-1, have strong prospects. However, teams like Providence, Lincoln-Way Central, Brother Rice, and Richards face crucial games that could significantly impact their playoff trajectories.

Unexpected Results

One of the week’s notable scores was Hillcrest’s 38-20 win against Lemont. Hillcrest, expected to be strong, initially faltered at 0-3 without scoring in their first two games. Now at 2-3, they surprised many by defeating Lemont. Senior Ladell Ross, who transitioned from receiver to quarterback, led Hillcrest with three touchdown passes. The South Suburban Blue division promises to offer intense competition this fall.
