What’s Next for the Grateful Dead Community?

The Grateful Dead concluded their live performances in 1995. Despite this, the band’s music and lore continue to resonate with new generations. In 2026, the community faces a shift. This summer stands out as the first in years without a distinct center guiding the fanbase.

Mainstay fans, known as Deadheads, now find themselves at a crossroads. With the passing of time, the question arises: what path will the Grateful Dead community follow next?

Earlier in the year, NPR Music’s Isabella Gomez Sarmiento and Felix Contreras embarked on a journey to find answers. They explored different avenues, observing how fans maintain their connection to the band’s powerful legacy.

During the ‘Days Between,’ which spans August 1 to August 9, NPR will release a series of stories, interviews, and podcasts. This period marks the birth and the anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death. The aim is to understand what continues to attract people to the Grateful Dead and how both fans and musicians intend to uphold the band’s enduring influence.
