Will Ospreay achieved a significant milestone on Sunday night during the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Double or Nothing event held in New York. Ospreay faced off against Samoa Joe in the first round of the Owen Hart Men’s Tournament.
The tournament winner will secure a shot at the AEW World Championship during All In, AEW’s main event, at Wembley Stadium in England. Ospreay emerged victorious in the match, held on May 24, 2026, in Queens, New York.
The match commenced with Ospreay executing an OsCutter, surprising Joe. Throughout the match, Ospreay delivered multiple Hidden Blades to earn the win. When asked about his potential to lead AEW if he wins the tournament and claims the championship, Ospreay expressed confidence in his abilities.
“It’s because I have that confidence and belief I can carry those three letters,” he stated at the post-show interview. “The middle letter, ‘E,’ stands for elite. When it comes to elite pro wrestling, there’s no one better. I firmly believe this.”
Ospreay emphasized his capabilities and readiness to elevate AEW, mentioning the company’s motto. He sees himself as the ‘Billy Goat’ ready to reach the top spot. Performing at Wembley Stadium was a lifelong dream for him, ignited during his school days while peers aspired to soccer careers.
Despite overcoming a neck injury and training with the Death Riders, Ospreay returned to form. The rivalry with Joe culminated in their Double or Nothing matchup. Ospreay’s next challenge will be against either Mark Davis or Jack Perry in the semifinals.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Swerve Strickland defeated Bandido, advancing to face either Claudio Castagnoli or Brody King in the semifinals. The Owen Cup finals are scheduled for June 28 at the Forbidden Door event.
