White House Criticizes Spain Amid Ceuta Border Crisis

The White House has criticized Spain’s left-leaning government following the collapse of the border between Spain’s North African enclave, Ceuta, and Morocco. On Thursday, White House principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly made a statement to Fox News linking the situation to far-left policies.

Kelly stated, “President Trump has warned Europe about the repercussions of continuing to implement far-left, globalist policies, such as enabling mass migration. Spain and countries that adopted this philosophy should change their approach or face severe consequences.”

Amid the escalating situation, Ceuta’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas, requested a national emergency declaration. Over 2,000 migrants crossed the border from Morocco into Ceuta in the last 10 days, leading to chaotic scenes captured in videos showing large numbers of migrants entering the Spanish territory.

The footage depicts groups of men, some carrying swimming flippers, making their way on foot into Ceuta, having swum from the Moroccan side. Police forces struggled to manage these groups, and some migrants were seen emerging from the sea to climb onto Ceuta’s rocky shores.

Despite Vivas’s request, Madrid denied declaring a national emergency. Spain’s Ministry of the Interior stated, according to El País, “The national civil protection regulations do not consider migratory flows a risk that necessitates emergency mechanisms.”

The recent border activity was described by Ceuta’s officials as a period “of particular intensity,” noting that migration from Morocco continually poses challenges, as reported by El País.

Spanish and Moroccan patrols have been conducting rescue operations to address the increased arrivals. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed commitment to resolving the situation quickly, stating on X that resources were being mobilized in cooperation with Moroccan and international authorities.

Sánchez has faced criticism from conservative voices in Spain for his immigration policies. Critics argue these policies, which guarantee services to minors entering illegally, incentivize migration. Conservative journalist Javier Negre noted the financial responsibilities Spain assumes for these minors.

Sánchez argues that migration supports Spain’s economy, as declining birth rates create a need for immigrants to sustain economic and social systems. In The New York Times, he wrote about the necessity of embracing migration to prevent economic stagnation.
