White House television pool members, including FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and NBC News, have announced a suspension of their pooled coverage of President Donald Trump. This decision follows Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, which he accuses of disseminating ‘fake news.’
Typically, the pool members rotate responsibility for covering the president and sharing footage. Monday was CNN’s turn. The media outlets issued a joint statement emphasizing the public’s need for accurate, independent government information. They declared that administrations should not restrict news organizations due to dissatisfaction with their reporting.
The announcement coincided with CNN, MS NOW, and Politico’s intention to pursue legal action against the White House ban. Their joint statement asserts, ‘This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes.’
The outlets also highlighted the abrupt revocation of credentials, underscoring the danger to press freedom and the necessity of independent journalism.
President Trump reiterated his position on Truth Social, saying, ‘The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS.’ He described fake news as a threat to national security that must be curtailed.
Past attempts by the Trump administration to restrict media access have met judicial opposition.
