Kyle Teel anticipated being sidelined for six to 12 weeks due to a sprained left ankle sustained on July 20 at Texas. Reflecting on his recovery, Teel shared on Friday at Rate Field, “Initially, it felt terrible. When doctors estimated a 12-week recovery, I prayed that night. I feel blessed to return much sooner. I’m grateful for this.” Teel was back with the Chicago White Sox as they opened a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins.
“I’m eager to get started,” Teel expressed. He has participated in only 19 games this season due to various injuries, including the recent ankle sprain. The team manager, Will Venable, noted, “Kyle’s journey this year with injuries and setbacks has been challenging. We’re thrilled to have him back behind the plate, bringing his energy back to the team.”
Teel’s season commenced on the injured list, recovering from a right hamstring strain incurred at the World Baseball Classic with Italy. A setback in May saw him sprain his right knee’s lateral collateral ligament during rehab with Triple-A Charlotte, delaying his return to regular play until June 22. After nearly a month of play, his ankle injury occurred during a swipe tag attempt in the second inning against the Rangers.
Teel is batting .190/.271/.317 with two doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs, and nine runs this season. “Feedback from Kyle and the medical staff suggests confidence in his lower body’s condition,” stated general manager Chris Getz. “He’s faced several lower-half injuries, but it seems they’re behind us, hopefully for good. We need him. He’s vital to the team, providing renewed strength.”
Teel showed strong performance during the recent rehab assignment in Charlotte, achieving 7-for-22 (.318) with a home run and three RBIs over six games starting August 25. “Initially, I felt close to recovery,” Teel recalled. “Progress was steady. Now, I’m ready to catch at full capacity.”
The White Sox reassigned catcher Drew Romo to Charlotte in alignment with Teel’s return. Romo’s current season stats show a .141/.239/.288 record with five doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBIs, and 17 runs over 60 games. Teel, alongside Jake Rogers, remains a key player for the Sox behind the plate.
“Romo performed admirably,” Getz commented. “His contributions to the pitching staff and the team have been invaluable. He’ll stay with the club on the taxi squad, staying prepared for future opportunities.” Venable explained the team strategy, “With one lefty on the opposing team, Rogers might start, as he bats right-handed. Teel will face the righties, given the upcoming matchups are mostly against right-handers.”
Teel expressed enthusiasm about impacting the Sox’s push for playoffs late in the season. The team held a 2½-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central as of Friday evening. The Guardians triumphed in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Tigers. “I aspired to return and support the team,” Teel remarked. “This part of the season excites me—the playoffs too. It’s about focusing on each day, each game. Today’s game is the priority.”
