On Tuesday, Chicago White Sox starter Sean Burke walked the first two batters against the Houston Astros, prompting a visit from pitching coach Zach Bove. Bove addressed Burke directly to refocus him, a strategy that worked as Burke soon recovered. Following two flyouts and a strikeout, Burke exited the first inning unscathed.
Burke found his rhythm, allowing just one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings, contributing to a 5-1 win with 26,838 spectators at Daikin Park. Burke reflected on his performance, noting the challenge of pitching effectively without his best form, emphasizing growth from grinding through tough moments.
During the sixth inning, Chicago White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci made a notable catch on a line drive hit by Houston Astros’ Nelson Velázquez. Burke struck out six and walked four in his 104-pitch outing, with the only hit against him being a one-out double by Taylor Trammell in the fifth.
Manager Will Venable praised Burke’s ability to settle down after a shaky start. Burke, along with relievers Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, and Grant Taylor, restricted the Astros to only three hits.
The White Sox maintained their lead in the American League Central standings, staying three games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians had a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on the same night.
Offensively, the White Sox capitalized on two-out opportunities. Andrew Benintendi drove in Sam Antonacci with a two-out single in the fifth. Colson Montgomery followed with a two-run double. Randal Grichuk added a two-out double in the seventh, driving in two more runs to extend the lead to 5-0.
Grichuk, unfamiliar with pitcher Tatsuya Imai, focused on timing and seized a favorable pitch for his hit. The team improved after a challenging previous game, where they struggled with runners in scoring position and left 14 stranded.
Venable highlighted the team’s resilience and improved decision-making at the plate, leading to positive offensive output. Burke also improved from his previous performance, managing walks effectively this time.
Burke appreciated catcher Drew Romo’s role in calming him during the game and praised the team’s offense for scoring crucial runs. With a supportive team and strategic pitching, Burke focused on delivering his best on the field.
