Will Mettee: Loyola’s Standout Linebacker

1 hour ago 0

Loyola’s senior linebacker, Will Mettee, is a key figure on the Ramblers’ team. Despite the similarity between his name and the school’s location, his impact extends far beyond this coincidence. Mettee, who resides in Evanston, is committed to playing for Boston College next year. He has been the leading tackler for Loyola, ranked No. 2 in the Chicago Tribune’s top 25, this entire season.

Mettee has played a crucial role in the team’s redemption season, setting high standards in the weight room. Loyola coach John Holecek, a former NFL linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, recognizes Mettee’s strength. Holecek states, “He’s as strong as I was in the NFL. He’s done it all.” In a key win over No. 3 Brother Rice, Mettee demonstrated his abilities with 16 total tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, and a touchdown from a fumble recovery. His bench press maxes at 345 pounds, with no sacrifice to his speed.

According to Jeff Lindeman, Loyola’s strength coach, Mettee stands out as the fastest linebacker they’ve had. “He’s likely our best overall athlete when it comes to speed, aggressiveness, skills,” Lindeman notes. Mettee’s focus on early weight room training, inspired by his brother Mac, has paid dividends. Mettee says, “My weight journey has been crucial for my football career.”

Mettee is joined by fellow senior Charlie Fowler, who also committed to Boston College. Though Fowler missed much of the season due to an injury, his return for the playoffs is expected. Mettee felt at home during a visit to Boston College, impressed by both the campus and the coaching staff. The Eagles’ coaches envision him as a linebacker following in the footsteps of stars like Matt Milano.

Mettee is motivated by the careers of notable Boston College linebackers such as Luke Kuechly and Miami Dolphins rookie Jacob Rodriguez. He aims to emulate their fast, smart, and aggressive style of play. Mettee’s dedication is evident as he prepares to fly to Boston with Fowler for a game, shortly after a critical matchup against No. 4 Mount Carmel. Regardless of the outcome, the Loyola team has moved beyond last season’s challenges, showing resilience and determination with each game.

Mettee observes, “We transformed everything, made it harder on ourselves in a good way. This year, it’s all business, and we’re getting it done.”
