Wisconsin Primary Highlights: Progressive Challenge and Tight Races

Francesca Hong, a Democratic socialist, is in a close contest against David Crowley in Wisconsin’s primary for governor. The winner will face Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany in November. This election could challenge the influence of progressives in this key battleground state. Tiffany secured a straightforward victory on Tuesday.

“We have built something that will change politics,” Hong told her supporters as the race remained unsettled. She emphasized the lasting impact of their efforts, even as the final results were pending. Reporting delays due to a mishap with absentee ballots in Milwaukee were expected to stall results until Wednesday.

Democrats aim to leverage low approval ratings for President Donald Trump to retain the governor’s office and flip both legislative chambers. This would grant them full control of Wisconsin’s state government for the first time since 2010.

Exciting Candidates and Tight Contests

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s son-in-law, Michael Alfonso, secured a victory in a five-way primary to reclaim Duffy’s former U.S. House seat.

In another race, Democrat Rebecca Cooke won a primary to set up a rematch with Republican U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden in a fiercely contested district. Cooke narrowly lost this highly competitive district in 2024.

Hong’s Platform and Controversial Stands

Hong, a single mother and former line cook, taps into discontent with mainstream Democrats and Trump’s agenda. Known for her distinct style, she champions causes like free childcare and healthcare. Yet, her past support for defunding the police sparked debate, particularly during the campaign’s only debate.

She also faced criticism for controversial social media posts, including calls to cancel Thanksgiving and critiques of Valentine’s Day. Hong regards these comments as attempts at humor.

Dan Jakubek, 44, a supporter from Marshall, dismissed qualms over her past statements, noting her appeal among young voters eager for change. However, some Democrats worry her platform could make her a tougher sell to moderate voters. Governor Tony Evers endorsed Crowley, emphasizing that he has a better chance against Tiffany.

Crowley and Democratic Unity

David Crowley stressed post-primary unity to defeat Tiffany. At a rally, he urged supporters to unite to prevent a “MAGA extremist” from winning. While Hong expressed a willingness to accept Evers’ support, voter sentiments varied.

While some Crowley supporters were concerned Hong might struggle in the general election, others believe Democrats could rally around her candidacy. Hong seeks to become Wisconsin’s first female and first Asian American governor, while Crowley aims to be the first Black governor.

Unpredictable Primary Developments

The decision by Evers not to run for a third term opened the field, initially attracting seven Democratic contenders. Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez seemed set to consolidate support but exited amid financial controversy, prompting Crowley’s return to the race with Evers’ backing.

Meanwhile, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, once seen as a frontrunner, exited the race following allegations of misconduct.

Alfonso’s Ambition and Challenges

Michael Alfonso aims to become Congress’s youngest member by winning Wisconsin’s 7th District. Despite securing Trump’s endorsement and praise, his candidacy faced skepticism from party stalwarts about his age and experience.

On another front, Democrat Cooke will challenge Van Orden again. Her earlier attempt in 2024 was narrowly defeated, setting the stage for another contentious battle in a district where Trump’s popularity is waning.
