Wyndham Clark faced scrutiny during the final round of the BMW Championship. The controversy erupted when Clark, a two-time U.S. Open champion, was observed during his pre-shot routine on the Par 4 14th hole at Bellerive Country Club. After hitting into the rough, the CBS broadcast captured him switching clubs multiple times and taking practice swings.
As he changed clubs, his caddie, David Pelekoudas, stood between Clark and the camera during a practice swing. This series of actions sparked a discussion between CBS analysts Trevor Immelman and Frank Nobilo. “He’s taking a long look at this. This is like the third club that he’s placed down behind the ball,” noted Immelman, with Nobilo suggesting the lie might be better with different clubs.
Golf fans voiced opinions on social media, turning the moment into a major discussion point. Despite this, Clark secured a three-shot victory. In a news conference on Tuesday, he addressed the incident. “I think any player, when they’re trying to judge a lie, takes out different clubs to see what it feels like,” Clark explained. He clarified that he did not improve his lie intentionally, noting incidents at previous tournaments where similar claims arose.
Clark emphasized integrity: “I know I didn’t do anything that was costing the integrity of the field.” USGA Rule 8.1b(4) permits players to “ground the club lightly right in front of or right behind the ball.” His earlier U.S. Open victory also had similar allegations.
Clark, aged 32, has won three events in 2026. Entering the Tour Championship third in the FedEx Cup standings, he trails Matt Fitzpatrick and leader Scottie Scheffler.
