The New York Yankees secured a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with notable performances on the field. Outfielder Cody Bellinger was pivotal, hitting a three-run home run off rookie Nolan McLean in the second inning. This contribution set the tone for the Yankees’ success at Yankee Stadium on Friday night.
During the event, an unusual disruption occurred when a spectator carrying a Palestinian flag sprinted onto the field, attracting immediate action from security personnel. The incident happened at exactly 9:11 p.m., symbolically coinciding with the date in memory. Yankee Stadium security swiftly tackled the individual, who managed to reach the field undetected initially. Fans reacted by chanting “U-S-A” as the man was escorted off the premises.
Following the incident, the game continued seamlessly, though not without another interruption. In the seventh inning, another attempt to breach the field was thwarted, highlighting the challenges during such commemorative events.
Reflecting on the anniversary, both teams donned special caps honoring the FDNY, NYPD, and other first responders. Across Major League Baseball, caps featured a distinctive “We Shall Never Forget” side patch. Ceremonies before the game included “God Bless America” and moments of silence, respectfully remembering the tragic events of September 11.
Designated hitter Ben Rice further elevated the Yankees’ performance, hitting a home run that contributed to their standing record of 85-62, marking a season-high 23 games above .500. This achievement underscored the team’s position, maintaining their pursuit of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, trailing by three games.
In addition to Bellinger’s heroics, rookie Spencer Jones delivered an RBI single in the first inning, while Ryan McMahon added an RBI in the eighth. Pitcher Carlos Rodón showcased resilience, allowing two runs and three hits over a season-high stretch of 6.3 innings, achieving eight strikeouts including those against Juan Soto.
Bellinger’s homer came after he caught the ceremonial first pitch from Brielle Saracini, the daughter of Victor Saracini, pilot of United Airlines Flight 175, which was tragically flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Bellinger’s impactful hit took McLean’s full-count curveball into the right field seats, granting the Yankees a 4-1 lead.
The Yankees will face the Mets again in the second game of the Subway Series, scheduled for Saturday at 1:35 p.m.
