Zaccharie Risacher, the first overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, is on the move after only two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. The 21-year-old is heading to the Dallas Mavericks following an NBA trade announced on Sunday. This trade concludes Atlanta’s short-lived experiment with their top pick.
NBA Trade Under Review
The trade will not be finalized until an ongoing investigation into salary cap accusations is completed. Risacher, known for his dunking skills, gained attention during his time with the Hawks, including a notable performance against the Portland Trail Blazers earlier in 2026.
Trade Details
As part of the trade, Atlanta acquired Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Oklahoma City secured two second-round picks, while Dallas received Risacher and guard Ryan Nembhard.
Unusual Early Career Move
Seeing a top draft pick traded for basketball reasons after just two years is rare. While draft-night trades are common and players like Andrew Wiggins have been traded quickly, Risacher’s early departure places him in a unique category. This scenario is reminiscent of Markelle Fultz and Pervis Ellison, who also faced early trades in their careers, though their moves were influenced by injuries.
Atlanta’s Decision
Unlike Fultz or Ellison, Risacher’s move wasn’t due to injuries. The Hawks decided not to continue with their choice after two seasons. His performance had notable moments, such as driving past Chris Paul in a game against the San Antonio Spurs.
Reflection on 2024 Draft Class
The 2024 NBA Draft class, featuring Risacher, Alex Sarr, and Cody Williams, was not seen as particularly strong. Comparisons were made with players like Victor Wembanyama from the previous year and Cooper Flagg from the following year. Risacher entered the league as a long two-way wing, recognized for his shot-making potential. During his rookie season, he averaged 12.6 points, which decreased to 9.6 in his second year.
