The Interview with Mayor Zohran Mamdani
July 18, 2026
Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City is gaining popularity, bucking the trend of political dissatisfaction among the public. Recent surveys indicate increasing support for Mamdani among New Yorkers. His involvement as a prominent supporter of the New York Knicks during their N.B.A. championship win and his participation in the city’s World Cup celebrations have contributed to his rising profile. Furthermore, a high-profile wedding held by Taylor Swift in the city has added to the celebratory atmosphere.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is leveraging his political capital in novel ways. His backing of three progressive candidates for the House of Representatives helped secure their victories over establishment-supported opponents, enhancing his reputation as an influential figure in the Democratic Party. However, Mamdani faces criticism from both conservative figures and Democratic leadership in Washington due to concerns about his influence and progressive agenda.
Earlier this week, I spoke with Mamdani about his intriguing and controversial approach to democratic socialist governance in New York City—a major hub of capitalism.
Mamdani’s Take on Political Threats
During the interview, we touched upon President Trump’s recent actions. He shared a video by Michael Savage, a pro-Trump commentator, suggesting that Mamdani should be criminalized and deported. Mamdani sees this as part of the deterioration of political and public discourse, stating that such hostility has become a norm.
While Mamdani remains composed and avoids personalizing these attacks, he acknowledges their impact on his security. He credits his safety to the N.Y.P.D., highlighting the frightening normalization of political violence and its acceptance of targeting marginalized groups in the city and the country.
