SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan sustained injuries in a car accident earlier this month. His ability to participate in training camp activities is expected to be limited, according to a team announcement when camp commenced.

A person familiar with Shanahan’s injuries disclosed that he suffered a concussion, a broken nose, several fractured ribs, and hand injuries. This information was provided under the condition of anonymity as the person was not authorized to publicly comment on the matter.

The team characterized Shanahan’s injuries as “non-life-threatening” and expressed gratitude to the first responders who assisted at the scene of the crash last week.

The 49ers are set to begin their first practice on Sunday, with assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster taking the lead. He will be supported by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.

Shanahan is approaching his tenth season as the 49ers’ coach. His reputation in the NFL is largely due to his offensive strategy and leadership. Under Shanahan’s guidance, San Francisco has reached the Super Bowl twice, following the 2019 and 2023 seasons, and has appeared in the NFC title game two additional times in 2021 and 2022. He boasts a 91-72 record in the regular season and playoffs, making him third in franchise history for wins, following George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).

Despite several injuries last season, the team completed a 12-5 regular season and secured a playoff victory. Shanahan earned fifth place in the voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year.
