Oklahoma’s Political Landscape Shift
Oklahoma’s heavily Republican political scene is facing major changes with two races sparking competition. Governor Kevin Stitt is term-limited, necessitating a new GOP leader. Meanwhile, former U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin left his seat to become Homeland Security Secretary.
Currently, Republican Alan Armstrong, an energy executive, holds the interim Senate position. However, Oklahoma law stops him from running for a full term as a temporary appointee. The Senate primary features Rep. Kevin Hern, a four-term congressman favored by Trump, competing against four lesser-known candidates.
The governor’s race sees nine contenders, including several notable Republicans. An August 25 runoff might follow if no candidate secures at least 50% of the primary votes.
California Faces Special Election After Swalwell’s Resignation
A special election in California will fill the vacancy left by former Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned amid sexual misconduct allegations. Swalwell, a former candidate for California governor, stepped down in April. He refutes the claims and intends to mount a defense.
The allegations, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, include two alleged assaults, one in 2019 and another in 2024, when the woman claiming the assault was reportedly too intoxicated to consent.
Georgia’s Runoff Elections for GOP Nominations
Georgia’s political scene is also heating up as runoffs are required to determine the Republican nominees for Senate and governor after the May primaries failed to produce winners with majority support.
In the Senate race, Rep. Mike Collins, a self-proclaimed “MAGA warrior,” faces Derek Dooley, a first-time candidate known for his coaching career. The victor will aim to challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November.
The governor’s primary sees Lt. Gov. Burt Jones against billionaire Rick Jackson. Trump endorsed Jones last August. The winner will confront Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, Atlanta’s former mayor, in the upcoming election.
Critical Voting in Washington, DC
Washington, DC is witnessing one of its most significant primaries in decades. For the first time since 1990, Democrats have the opportunity to elect both a new mayor and a congressional delegate simultaneously.
