The United States Postal Service (USPS) emphasizes the need for Americans to secure their dogs during mail deliveries. Last year, over 5,200 postal workers were bitten by dogs. The USPS has started its annual Dog Bite Awareness campaign in June to decrease attacks on mail carriers and support responsible pet ownership.
Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager, stressed the importance of keeping postal employees safe daily as they work in rapidly changing environments. She stated, “Preventing dog-related incidents requires constant, shared vigilance.”
The USPS pointed out that even calm dogs can react unpredictably if they feel threatened or protective. Pet owners are advised to keep dogs restrained when mail is being delivered. Ensuring pets are leashed during delivery hours and avoiding accepting mail directly from carriers while pets are nearby are recommended practices.
The USPS has warned that dog attacks on postal workers can lead to significant financial liabilities for owners, including medical costs and income loss.
The experience of San Antonio letter carrier Fiona Hudson highlights these dangers. “I was walking my route when a dog jumped the fence and lunged at me,” Hudson described in her statement. Despite her physical injuries healing, the emotional trauma of that incident lingers.
Hudson called for pet owners to secure pets during mail deliveries. A lack of safety precautions can lead to suspended mail services. In some cases, residents may need to retrieve mail from a local post office. If issues persist, homeowners might need to rent a post office box. These precautions also extend to neighbors if a roaming dog poses a threat.
USPS data revealed that Los Angeles experienced the highest number of dog attacks on mail carriers last year, with 70 reported incidents. Dallas followed with 50, Denver with 45, Houston with 44, and Chicago with 43 reported attacks.
A spokesperson reiterated that employee safety is a paramount concern for USPS. Securing pets not only protects postal workers but also ensures uninterrupted mail delivery.
