Conservative commentator Scott Jennings shared updates regarding Senator Mitch McConnell’s health during a segment on CNN, indicating an improvement in McConnell’s condition. The former Senate leader has been away from public life since June 14 after being hospitalized and subsequently spending time at an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

Though McConnell’s office confirmed his discharge and ongoing recovery at home, the senator himself has not made public appearances, raising questions about his overall health and capability to complete his term. During his discussion on CNN’s The Arena, Jennings mentioned that McConnell personally reached out to him, appearing alert and engaged, with politics still at the forefront of their conversation. McConnell, aged 84, reportedly focused on issues such as the Michigan Senate race, Republican electoral strategies, the farm bill, and Senate filibuster preservation.

Jennings noted that McConnell’s health seemed notably better compared to earlier interactions following his hospitalization. “He called me directly from his phone today,” Jennings said, observing that being at home appeared to benefit McConnell’s recovery.

According to Jennings, McConnell intends to return to the Senate for sessions beginning on September 14, eager to address noteworthy legislative matters before his term concludes in January. Jennings emphasized the senator’s continued engagement with the Senate, participating in meetings and maintaining communication with staff and colleagues despite his absence.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed concern over McConnell’s lack of public communication, suggesting that the senator’s constituents deserve direct updates about his condition. Jennings countered this criticism by describing McConnell as intensely private, hesitant to publicize his health details, a stance shaped by his past experiences as a polio survivor. Jennings remarked that while McConnell is aware of public scrutiny concerning his health, such criticism is frustrating for the senator.

Despite not voting since June, McConnell remains focused on political developments. Jennings relayed details of their conversation, showing McConnell’s active interest in key Senate races, such as in Michigan and Maine, alongside ongoing national political dynamics. Additionally, McConnell discussed policy priorities he hopes to address upon returning to Washington, including the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the farm bill.

Jennings indicated that McConnell acknowledged the unusual nature of his absence, conveying confidence in his recovery process and clarifying that doctors anticipate no life-threatening concerns. Nonetheless, McConnell expressed some frustration with the persistent speculation about his condition.
