The second day of the murder trial for Karmelo Anthony, a Texas teenager, began with heightened tensions at the Collin County courthouse. Anthony is accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a track meet incident in Frisco, Texas, on April 2, 2025.
Before the day’s proceedings started, three individuals were escorted from the courthouse. A woman verbally confronted a sheriff’s deputy, a blogger from North Carolina was removed for allegedly using a racial slur toward the same deputy, and a third person was suspected of violating courthouse rules concerning cell phone usage and recording.
Karmelo Anthony, 19, who is Black, has been charged with murder. The conflict reportedly arose from a disagreement over a seat at the event. Anthony has entered a plea of not guilty, claiming self-defense. His defense attorney, Mike Howard, reiterated this stance during opening statements. Conversely, prosecutor Bill Wirskye described the incident as an ‘unjustified provoked murder.’
The trial has captured national attention, partly due to its racial elements. Criticisms have arisen regarding the jury’s composition, which lacks Black members, drawing significant scrutiny from various groups and observers.
During Friday’s session, Texas State District Judge John Roach Jr. issued a firm warning to the public audience. He stated that any attempt to speak during proceedings would lead to immediate removal and a ban from returning to the courtroom.
The trial coverage includes contributions from Maria Guerrero in McKinney, Texas, and Suzanne Gamboa in Austin, Texas.
