The United States, along with members of the Shield of the Americas, has condemned attempts to destabilize the government of President Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia. A statement released on Friday emphasized the support for Paz’s administration, elected by a majority, against attempts to disrupt essential supplies to the people of Bolivia.
The statement criticized actions intended to challenge the election’s outcome, arguing that mob actions should not replace democratic decisions. It also called for accountability for those using illegal funds from drug trafficking to fuel protests. The member countries appealed to those with legitimate concerns to engage in dialogue and warned against manipulation by groups aiming to restore power through unlawful means.
Recent demonstrations in Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, have intensified due to inflation and increased fuel prices, leading to significant road blockades. The protests have resulted in shortages of critical resources, contributing to an ongoing economic crisis in the nation.
Bolivia’s Defense Minister, Marcelo Salinas, stepped down amid the turmoil as President Paz’s measures, including land reforms and removal of fuel subsidies, spurred public dissatisfaction. Indigenous communities have voiced concerns over potential evictions tied to new agricultural policies.
Ex-President Evo Morales, associated with the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, has called for expedited elections, suggesting President Paz faces limited options. Morales continues to avoid arrest on serious charges, which he claims are politically driven.
Supporting the current Bolivian government, War Secretary Pete Hegseth underlined a commitment to countering any coup attempts, reinforcing alliances in the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C) to combat regional threats. He reiterated a stance against narco-terrorist activities compromising regional stability.
This joint statement by countries including Argentina, Chile, and others, was made against a backdrop of escalating tensions in Bolivia, asserting continued support for President Paz’s administration amidst efforts to secure the nation’s democratic integrity.
