A recent survey by Popmenu reveals that Americans are growing frustrated with tipping practices, as 78% believe these practices “have become ridiculous.” Nearly 74% have noticed restaurants increasing the suggested gratuity amounts on digital screens.
When prompted, 59% of the 1,000 adults surveyed in March said they feel compelled to leave a tip.
“Americans are fed up with tipping culture as nearly 9 in 10 say it’s completely ‘out of control,'” the survey highlights.
Despite the pushback against “tip creep,” many diners still support traditional tipping when service is provided. Vicki Parmelee, owner of Jumby Bay Island Grill in Jupiter, Florida, mentioned that a 20% tip is considered fair when dining in.
Parmelee added that customers dislike screens pressuring them to tip in otherwise optional situations. “It is pretty annoying to order a coffee and then have them turn around a terminal expecting a tip,” she stated.
Derek Simms, CEO of Simms Hospitality Group in Texas, echoed these sentiments. Although working within the industry, Simms admitted that even he finds tipping screens “a very awkward moment.” He noted that many consumers bypass preset options altogether, choosing to enter a custom tip instead.
Both restaurateurs emphasize that businesses should avoid pressuring customers into leaving gratuities. “A tip is always something that’s earned,” Parmelee said. Simms warned that forcing tips could harm customer loyalty.
“I don’t want to lose a customer over some weird manipulation,” Simms cautioned.
The survey shows a clear distinction between tipping at full-service restaurants and other transactions. While 42% are more comfortable skipping gratuities in casual situations, they maintain traditional tipping levels for restaurant servers.
“When you get good service, you want to reward that,” Parmelee remarked. Many still tip around 20% for excellent service and even more for exceptional experiences.
