NBA Finals Game 3: Trump’s Attendance and Its Impact

3 weeks ago 0

New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson garnered attention when President Donald Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson’s reaction, and past social media activity, sparked discussions about his political views.

Trump’s involvement in sports has been controversial, with athletes often declining White House invitations to celebrate victories. In this game, increased security measures due to Trump’s presence dissatisfied fans. Knicks star Josh Hart’s 2020 tweet celebrating Trump’s election loss was revisited by many.

Before the game, a TikTok video by Eren suggested Robinson would perform better with Trump watching. Robinson confirmed this sentiment with a comment. In earlier instances, Robinson posted a photo with an American flag, leading to discussions about his allegiances after mentioning owning a Trump flag.

“You ain’t lying, brother.” — Mitchell Robinson

Newsweek’s attempts to get comments from Robinson’s agent were unsuccessful. However, voter records indicate Robinson is a registered Republican in Louisiana as of September 2024, although this doesn’t clarify his support for Trump. Robinson downplayed the significance of Trump’s attendance in interviews.

Robinson’s teammate, Karl-Anthony Towns, criticized Trump in 2018 for calling LeBron James unintelligent. Towns emphasized Trump should address more pressing issues like Flint, Michigan’s water crisis. Questions about Robinson’s relationship with Towns were deflected with a simple emoji response.

Knicks forward OG Anunoby suggested Trump’s spectating shouldn’t affect the team’s performance, with a focus on winning the game. Knicks guard Jose Alvarado noted the team adapted by moving watch parties to Bryant Park due to restricted access near Madison Square Garden.

Trump faced boos entering the arena and during a jumbotron appearance, although chants of “USA!” echoed, possibly attributed to patriotic attendees rather than direct support for Trump. The stringent security frustrated fans, disrupting game rituals and city movement.
