Victor Wembanyama’s Controversial Play in NBA Finals Game 3

3 weeks ago 0

During Game 3 of the NBA Finals, a controversial moment involving San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama and New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson drew significant attention. The incident occurred during the first half as the Knicks executed a play on offense. Wembanyama became entangled with Brunson, appearing to aggressively push through a screen while Brunson held his jersey.

A replay showed Wembanyama delivering a forceful shove to Brunson’s head and neck, causing the Knicks guard to nearly fall to the court. Brunson reacted swiftly, confronting Wembanyama, who responded with laughter. Despite the aggressive move, referees chose not to penalize Wembanyama with a call or review for a flagrant foul, allowing the game to continue.

The Spurs ultimately secured a victory at Madison Square Garden with a score of 115-111. However, Wembanyama’s actions prompted criticism from analysts and former Knicks star Stephon Marbury, who advocated for firm action against the Spurs player.

Marbury commented, “Wemby is an international player. They play dirty overseas. We’re not used to playing dirty in America like how Wemby threw Jalen Brunson. If I saw this on film, the next game I would retaliate by striking him in the rib cage.”

Marbury’s remarks ignited further discussions, suggesting that the Knicks should retaliate in the upcoming game. Marbury, who played for the Knicks from 2004 to 2009, joined a cohort of former Knicks players supporting the team throughout their 2026 playoff run. These individuals include Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Walt “Clyde” Frazier, the latter being the only one among them to have won championships with the Knicks in 1970 and 1973.

While Marbury expressed his passion for his former team, his advice appeared ill-timed. Hostile fans gained attention for clashing with Spurs fans postgame. As Game 4 between the Knicks and Spurs approaches, tensions remain high, with some players and analysts advocating for retaliation against Wembanyama.

While it’s unclear how the next game will unfold, it is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
