Scientists have uncovered marine communities thriving on an ancient whale graveyard. This site, found on the ocean floor of the southeastern Indian Ocean, provides a habitat for jellyfish, tubeworms, and brittle stars. The depth reaches nearly 23,000 feet, making it the deepest and oldest discovered to date.
Whale carcasses contribute to forming these unique marine ecosystems. The large size and the chemical composition of whale bones offer sustenance for nearby marine life. Xikun Song, a biologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the challenges in locating these graveyards due to their deep ocean setting.
Researchers made extensive explorations using deep-sea submersibles in 2023. They surveyed the necropolis, identifying five sites and fossils, including beaked and baleen whales’ skulls. The finding revealed bones estimated to be 5.3 million years old.
The carcasses host diverse creatures like sea cucumbers, squat lobsters, and saltwater clams. Many possible new species were observed. This was highlighted in a study published in Nature, with paleontologist Stephen Godfrey noting the astounding potential number of specimens.
Multiple factors may have allowed the bones’ preservation over millions of years. Their density helped resist bone-eating worms, and their location in deep waters prevented coverage by sediments. The bones also received mineral coatings from seawater, offering protection from degradation.
Researchers speculated that whales might have died naturally or due to deep-sea diving challenges. The V-shaped area might have directed the carcasses to their resting location.
Such discoveries illustrate how marine life adapts to extreme environments. Paleontologist Giovanni Bianucci from the University of Pisa stated the study sheds light on adaptation to challenges like light scarcity, low oxygen, and high pressure.
The study received backing from institutions like the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Associated Press ensures the independence of its content.
