The biopic ‘Reagan’, featuring Dennis Quaid as former President Ronald Reagan, will be re-released in theaters to mark America’s 250th birthday. This expanded version includes new scenes for audiences.
According to Deadline, limited screenings will take place on July 4 in over a dozen cities. A broader release is planned for September in 600 theaters nationwide. Viewers can expect an extra 10 minutes of footage not shown in the original release.
New scenes offer additional insights into Reagan’s life. They include interactions between Reagan and his wife Nancy, portrayed by Penelope Ann Miller, in the Oval Office. Another scene explores the dynamic between Reagan and his father, Jack, who struggled with alcoholism. Additional scenes set at the Reagans’ ranch near Santa Barbara are part of this expanded cut.
Director Sean McNamara shared his thoughts on the re-release, emphasizing his excitement about reintroducing some favorite moments initially left out. He expressed relief and happiness that audiences will see these scenes for the first time.
In its first run, the film grossed over $30 million worldwide, based on Box Office Mojo figures. The discrepant reception from critics and audiences was notable. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a low critics’ score of 17%, contrasting sharply with an audience rating of 98%.
Paul Kengor, the author of books on Reagan that helped shape the movie, noted the striking disparity in reviews. This difference reminded him of Reagan’s overwhelming electoral victory in 1980. Reagan’s popularity in that year was mirrored by the movie’s audience score despite critical disapproval.
Kengor commented on the striking similarity to historical events. He drew parallels between the critics’ reception of Reagan as a statesman and their assessment of the film. Despite negative reviews, Reagan was a widely supported leader, winning 49 out of 50 states in the 1984 election.
Critics had harsh words for the movie. The Boston Globe and Washington Post dismissed the film as dull and worthless, respectively. The Daily Beast labeled it the worst movie of the year.
Despite its mixed critical reception, the film’s storytelling remains a reflection of Reagan’s life and legacy. Audience interest in such stories underscores the ongoing public fascination with historical narratives.
