In New York City, tension arose between New York Knicks owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani prior to a significant Knicks game. The disagreement began when planned watch parties outside Madison Square Garden, a frequent occurrence during the Knicks’ playoff journey, were halted before Wednesday’s game. The NYPD cited President Donald Trump’s visit as the reason for calling off the Game 3 watch party.
Dolan then chose to cancel Game 4’s watch party, intended for 1,000 ticketed fans, claiming, “we’re about millions of people.” He expressed disappointment in a rare interview with WFAN, stating, “This is about celebrating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of basketball. This is what the mayor’s office and the commissioner’s office is trying to kill.”
Later, Mayor Mamdani responded on social media, noting that MSG had applied for a permit accommodating 500-999 fans, and Dolan “decided to cancel the watch party.” The dispute persisted just an hour before Game 4, with MSG issuing a statement targeting Mamdani again. They claimed they declined the city’s permit because it would exclude countless fans wishing to celebrate, saying it was unfair to limit such a gathering to a mere 1,000 people.
The City Reporter revealed MSG’s permit application, indicating they had the option to request permits for varying attendance levels. Meanwhile, a city-organized watch party in Bryant Park resulted in disorder, a recurring issue during the Knicks’ Finals appearances. Street closures were consistently enforced on NBA Finals game days.
