Bill Gates expressed regret over his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, labeling them as a “grave error in judgment.” During a closed-door session with the House Oversight Committee, Gates asserted that he never observed or suspected Epstein of engaging in criminal behavior.
Gates stated his philanthropic interests initially led him to Epstein, who promised to help raise significant funds for global health initiatives. Their association began in 2011, years after Epstein’s guilty plea for soliciting prostitution from a minor in Florida. According to Gates, all connections ceased in 2014 when Epstein’s promises remained unfulfilled.
The documents from the Justice Department revealed the extent of Gates’ interaction with Epstein, including meetings and email exchanges. Gates clarified that he never visited Epstein’s properties, including his island.
Lawmakers questioned Gates on why he maintained ties with Epstein after his guilty plea. Some representatives found him cooperative, while others described his demeanor as combative.
Rep. Robert Garcia criticized Gates for poor judgment, acknowledging Gates was aware of Epstein’s criminal history but continued interaction for financial gain for his foundation.
The Gates Foundation confirmed minimal meetings with Epstein led by claims of mobilizing resources for health causes. These interactions resulted in no joint fund creation nor payments to Epstein.
Gates’ former wife, Melinda French Gates, indicated their relationship with Epstein caused marital strain.
Epstein was charged in 2019 with sex trafficking minors. He allegedly orchestrated a network for abusing young girls from 2002 to 2005. He died by suicide in prison that year.
Notably, other prominent figures like former President Bill Clinton have faced scrutiny for past associations with Epstein. Clinton denied knowledge of Epstein’s misconduct and ended his relationship before the 2008 plea.
Discussions on seeking testimony from President Donald Trump occurred, given his known friendship with Epstein. Claims of wrongdoing by Trump lack supporting evidence according to current findings.
