A federal judge in Georgia, Eleanor Ross, has issued an apology to a former law clerk for her inappropriate conduct involving a sexual incident with a police officer in her office during work hours. The apology follows two House Republicans from Georgia filing articles of impeachment against her.
Details of the Allegations
Judge Ross, who presides in the Northern District of Georgia, acknowledged her behavior was inexcusable. In a letter, she expressed regret for her false accusations against the clerk and for not properly addressing her previous misconduct.
The allegations state that Judge Ross engaged in sexual activity with Atlanta Police Department Deputy Chief Kelley Collier in her chambers, with staff reportedly overhearing the incident. Nominated by former President Barack Obama in 2014, Ross faced scrutiny and disciplinary actions after these findings.
Impeachment Proceedings
Representatives Andrew Clyde and Clay Fuller have submitted impeachment resolutions citing judicial misconduct. Clyde emphasized the necessity for congressional accountability, while Fuller highlighted breaches in judicial ethics and failure to maintain professional standards.
Clyde accused Ross of improper sexual conduct, attending a partisan political event, and obstructing official proceedings. His resolution claims Ross concealed her extramarital affair with Collier from October 2023 to October 2025.
Judicial Inquiry Findings
Ross faced a private reprimand, agreeing not to pursue a leadership role and apologizing to former clerks. A special committee found evidence of misconduct, including participating in a partisan event and initially lying about the allegations.
The inquiry revealed Ross attended a political event hosted by a district attorney while presiding over court matters. She later disclosed details of her attendance and the consumption of alcohol.
Ross eventually recanted her false statements after evidence emerged but was not absolved due to the timing of her confession.
Possible Consequences
The House Judiciary Committee will determine if impeachment proceedings should commence. If the House impeaches her, the Senate will decide on Ross’s removal. Ross hopes her acknowledgment of her failures represents a step towards rectifying the harm caused.
