Senate Republicans Block War-Powers Resolution Amid Trump’s Peace Deal with Iran

Senate Republicans narrowly blocked an attempt to limit President Donald Trump’s authority over military actions in Iran. This move comes as a peace agreement begins to take shape. However, many details of the deal remain undisclosed.

Failed War-Powers Resolution

Sen. Raphael Warnock’s resolution aimed to curb Trump’s military power. Despite previous progress in the Senate, the resolution did not succeed. Absences played a role in benefiting the GOP’s efforts to provide Trump with more time to negotiate a war-ending deal.

Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, a leading figure in the Democrats’ war powers campaign, stated that the potential deal could mark an ‘intermission’ in fighting while negotiations continue. Kaine emphasized the need for Congressional consultation, as required by the Constitution.

Republican Support for Trump

Some Republican Senators, like Susan Collins, Bill Cassidy, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul, joined Democrats in supporting the resolution initially. However, James Risch, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, argued that the Democrats’ efforts could disadvantage U.S. negotiations with Iran.

“If a miracle happened, and this passed, do you think Iran would sign the negotiated deal? Of course not,” Risch stated.

Awaiting Details of the Peace Agreement

Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted that Congress has not received a briefing on the deal. Thune conveyed optimism that the administration would present the agreement to Congress soon.

Sen. Chris Murphy expressed concerns regarding early reports, claiming the deal might benefit Iran more than the United States. Murphy described it as a ‘bad deal’ but stressed the necessity of ending the conflict and minimizing further losses.

“It’s essentially a surrender,” Murphy said. “We have to end this war,” he added, underscoring the importance of prioritizing American lives and resources.
