Hillary Clinton Addresses Graham Platner’s Candidacy Amid Controversies

2 weeks ago 0

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was recently asked about her support for Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. At the event held at 92NY, she avoided directly answering the question, stating, “I feel about him the way I feel about any candidate. I want to see what kind of candidate he actually turns out to be.”

Clinton appeared to minimize the impact of Platner’s ongoing scandals, describing them as “bumps on the road” in terms of his character. She remarked on these issues during a conversation with David Remnick of The New Yorker. Remnick questioned her description, prompting Clinton to clarify, “Yeah, clearly bumps on the road in terms of his prior behavior, some of his prior statements.”

Clinton also mentioned her experience with Maine Sen. Susan Collins, acknowledging the difficulty Platner might face in unseating her. “I served with [Maine Sen.] Susan Collins, she is going to be very hard to beat. It’s going to be a tough election. So I’m reserving,” Clinton added, indicating a cautious stance.

When asked hypothetically by Remnick where she would cast her vote if she were a Mainer, Clinton responded jokingly, “I’m not a Mainer. I’m a New Yorker.” She then shifted the conversation toward the broader significance of the Democratic Party regaining control of the House of Representatives in 2026.

The controversies surrounding Platner’s campaign have been significant. They include allegations ranging from sexually explicit messages and offensive social media posts to a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery and internal campaign staff issues. A recent report from the New York Times brought new allegations of violent behavior with former girlfriends to light.

Despite these issues, some Democratic politicians continue to support Platner. Others have opted not to distance themselves from him. Clinton’s comments have added an element of intrigue and complexity to the perception of Platner’s campaign.
