President Donald Trump has blamed vandalism for the recent issues affecting the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Reports have surfaced of a persistent algae bloom and peeling surface material following its costly renovation. In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump accused unknown actors of damaging the pool, which became green soon after a significant overhaul.

The renovation aimed to provide water with an “American flag blue” appearance. However, algae growth and surface deterioration have been problematic. Crews are working to rectify these issues as investigations continue into the alleged damage. Trump assured the public that his administration has worked on various renovation projects throughout Washington, D.C.

Vandalism Allegations

Trump claimed the damage resulted from targeted vandalism, alleging that individuals used chemicals to harm the pool’s surface. He also accused ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl of interfering with the pool’s condition. Trump stated that the algae problem is mostly resolved and that repairs would be undertaken soon, with law enforcement probing the incident.

Scott Jennings, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, supported Trump’s claims when speaking with CNN. He asserted the belief that some individuals are determined to damage national monuments and praised Trump’s cleanup efforts in the capital.

Renovation Issues

“You have no plants, probably they pumped in like city water, which added chlorine content to it, and once that precipitated out, then you have just basically water,” explained John Wilson Jr., President of Aqua Doc Lake and Pond.

The Reflecting Pool’s problems appeared days after a $14 million renovation concluded. The project aimed at repainting the basin and enhancing water quality for future celebrations. However, the pool quickly turned green due to algae proliferation, leading to a comprehensive cleanup effort by the National Park Service.

Experts, like John Wilson of Aqua Doc Lake and Pond, remarked that algae blooms are typical in shallow, sun-exposed areas, especially during warm periods. Treatments, including hydrogen peroxide and ozone-based filtration, were deployed in efforts to manage and improve the water’s clarity.

Concerns Over Maintenance

Visitors observed peeling floor material in parts of the pool, sparking further concerns about the renovation’s quality. Loose fragments have been reportedly handled or removed by tourists, heightening maintenance and durability worries.

Officials have previously described these issues as normal startup consequences linked to dormant supply lines and environmental factors. Crews are maintaining continuous efforts to address these problems before major events on the National Mall.
