President Trump recently shared on his Truth Social platform a video showing ongoing construction on a new White House ballroom. This venue, which he describes as a ‘military complex,’ occupies the site of the previous East Wing. The project is notably progressing despite legal attempts by opposition groups to halt it.
The footage reveals substantial progress, including a nearly complete building outline and partially constructed floors. Two massive cranes are evident in the vicinity near the Treasury Building. Trump expressed enthusiasm in a statement, proclaiming, ‘The Great Ballroom and Military Complex being built at the White House… When completed, it will be the finest of its kind, anywhere in the World! President DONALD J. TRUMP.’
The video was shared on the X platform by MAGA Voice, an account supportive of Trump with 1.5 million followers.
Ballroom History
Trump initially announced plans for the ballroom in May 2025 during an NBC interview, mentioning ‘three or four different concepts.’ By July 2025, the project was formally introduced by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. The design includes approximately 90,000 square feet, seating for 650 people, and an estimated cost of $200 million, funded by Trump and other donors. The East Wing, dating back to 1902, was demolished that October.
Although initially claiming the ballroom wouldn’t affect White House structures, changes occurred after consulting with architects and construction experts.
In April 2026, the National Capital Planning Commission, heavily influenced by Trump allies, approved the plan with an 8-1 vote.
Legal Complications
The project has faced resistance, particularly from groups like the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In March 2026, a preliminary injunction ordered by U.S. District Judge Richard Leon limited non-security-related construction. However, the D.C. Court of Appeals later allowed the work to continue.
By August 2026, the D.C. Circuit reiterated Leon’s ruling, stating congressional approval was necessary. Yet, the Supreme Court issued a subsequent injunction enabling the project to proceed. Trump praised this decision, citing the complex’s importance for national security, including features like bomb shelters and military facilities.
Rising Cost
Originally estimated at $200 million, the ballroom’s cost rose to $400 million by March 2026. An internal estimate later suggested by Clark Construction indicated potential expenses of $600 million.
Triumphal Arch Proposal
Trump is also pursuing a plan for a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. Approved by the National Capital Planning Commission in July, modifications requested by the U.S. military include military features such as drone facilities and sniper stations.
