The United States has launched a military operation at the U.S.-Mexico border, sending hundreds of troops to the Rio Grande amid reports of cartel violence. This development was confirmed by the U.S. Northern Command on Friday as part of Operation Unified Response.
According to a spokesperson for the Northern Command, the operation aims to rapidly bolster the military and federal forces already active in the Rio Grande Valley. The goal is to enhance border security, improve response capabilities to any threats, and support federal law enforcement along the border.
The spokesperson stated, “Operation Unified Response will increase patrol capacity, reinforce key areas, provide additional monitoring and detection capabilities, and secure critical locations in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”
The decision to increase the number of U.S. troops in the area follows a reported shooting incident involving the U.S. Coast Guard near Garceno, Texas, last Saturday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this event.
“The operation is part of the ongoing Operation Ardent Vanguard, through which Joint Task Force – Southern Border continues to provide military capabilities in support of protecting U.S. sovereignty at the Southern Border,” the Northern Command spokesperson explained.
NewsNation reports that the move was partially motivated by the recent shooting incident in which Coast Guard officers faced gunfire from across the border. However, details on whether Mexican authorities are collaborating in the latest operation remain unclear.
