Renovation Woes with the Reflecting Pool

1 week ago 0

The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial is facing challenges after a recent renovation effort. A new paint job aimed to reseal and refresh the aging concrete basin, aligning with the country’s 250th birthday celebrations. President Trump’s administration initiated the project’s completion within a tight timeline of two weeks.

However, issues have cropped up. The fresh blue coating, meant to evoke the ‘American flag blue,’ is peeling off in chunks, revealing the original concrete beneath. The result is a mishmash of blue and pea green hues, forming a less-than-ideal visual impression alongside an algae issue.

The algae bloom, spurred by heat and humidity, earlier turned the water a bright acid green. Although the Interior Department boasted on social media about eliminating the algae and achieving ‘crystal clear’ water, reports on Friday depicted a different scene. Despite efforts by the National Park Service to scrub the basin clean, loose algae clumps remained visible, and the basin appeared much the same as before.

The biggest concern involves the large sections where the new coating is missing. One gap, approximately the size of a park bench, had a long strip of coating waving in the water’s current. The underlying concrete was exposed, contradicting government assurances of a successful renovation.

Locals and visitors observed these renovation shortcomings firsthand. Alex Hobe, for instance, discovered a small, rough paint chip while passing by after making food deliveries. This tangible evidence highlights the ongoing issues plaguing the project.
