South Carolina Republican Senate Primary Heads to Runoff

Senator Darline Graham, appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, faces a runoff primary against Representative Ralph Norman on August 25. This runoff will determine the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in the upcoming November elections. Graham seeks to complete the term initiated by her late brother, Lindsey Graham.

President Donald Trump endorsed Graham, hoping to bolster her campaign among 10 other GOP contenders. Despite this support, Graham’s lack of previous elected office experience raised concerns among South Carolina voters, affecting her performance in the primary.

Republican voter Bob Howell expressed skepticism about Graham’s candidacy, stating, “I like President Trump, but I don’t think that it’s necessarily what sways my vote.” This mindset reflects previous occurrences where Trump’s endorsements did not guarantee victories in primaries, such as the gubernatorial race involving Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson.

Darline Graham replaced her brother after his unexpected death on July 11 due to cardiac arrest. Lindsey Graham had been seeking re-election, and his sister’s appointment came with Trump’s prompt endorsement. In her short tenure, Darline Graham played a key role in passing a significant sanctions bill targeting Russia and Iran, a continuation of her brother’s legislative efforts. She also participated in the confirmation of Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Despite these achievements, Graham acknowledges the necessity to prove her capability to voters. “I’m not being handed the seat. I realize that I have to earn votes, so I’m working really hard to do that,” she mentioned. The state has not seen a Democratic Senate victory since 1998, which positions the Republican nominee as a favorite in November.

Norman, who aligns with Trump’s policies, faces Graham in the runoff within a month. Graham aims to consolidate support to retain the family legacy within the Senate, continuing from where her brother left off.
