The United States soccer team has progressed to the knockout stage of the World Cup despite the absence of star forward Christian Pulisic, beating Australia 2-0. This marks their second consecutive victory in the expanded 48-team tournament.
The U.S. topped Group D after Paraguay defeated Turkey 1-0. Folarin Balogun, who contributed two goals in a match against Paraguay on June 12, praised Pulisic’s quality and leadership. However, he emphasized that the team could still succeed without him. Pulisic missed Friday’s game due to a calf injury.
Historically, missing a player like Pulisic might have hindered the team’s performance in past World Cups. Since their hosting in 1994, the team has seen significant changes. The current tournament witnessed them winning two straight matches for the first time since 1930. The U.S. scored six goals in total, nearing their record for most goals in a single World Cup.
Alex Freeman, the game’s youngest participant at 21, scored his first career World Cup goal, which helped secure a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute. His goal came after a deflected shot by Sergiño Dest and was confirmed through video review. Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Freeman’s humility and eagerness to learn.
Earlier in the match, an own-goal from Australia’s Cameron Burgess gave the U.S. a lead after Folarin Balogun’s pass intended for Ricardo Pepi. Balogun spoke about his desire to create opportunities, saying any contribution that aids the team’s success feels rewarding.
Despite dominating the first half, the Americans did not score after halftime. Socceroos coach Tony Popovic acknowledged the quality, power, and athleticism of the U.S. team. The performances have raised expectations for America as they build momentum.
Coach Pochettino maintained a balanced view, noting the importance of belief and performance. Meanwhile, Alex Freeman emphasized the depth of the team’s roster by highlighting Ricardo Pepi’s excellent performance in Pulisic’s absence.
