1 week ago 0

Oklahoma’s baseball team defeated North Carolina 9-3 in the opening game of the College World Series finals held in Omaha, Neb. on Saturday. This victory puts the Sooners just one win away from claiming their third national title. Deiten Lachance was a standout performer, hitting two home runs off North Carolina’s ace pitcher, Jason DeCaro.

The Sooners, boasting a 42-22 record, extended their winning streak to nine games. They took control with a four-run surge in the fourth inning. This effort was supported by Cord Rager and two relievers who effectively limited North Carolina, preventing their runners from reaching second base after an early three-run lead.

Oklahoma previously won national championships in 1951 and 1994. They aim to secure their next title on Sunday. Meanwhile, North Carolina will attempt to even the series to push for a decisive Game 3.

DeCaro encountered an uncharacteristic struggle, exiting during the fourth inning after the Sooners picked up four runs. It began with Kyle Branch breaking a tie with a two-run single. Following Branch’s display, Jason Walk and Camden Johnson drove in runs to expand the lead to 7-3. DeCaro’s day ended after allowing seven runs, despite entering the game with an impressive 2.31 ERA. Prior to this, he had never conceded more than three runs in any start.

Lachance provided the Sooners with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, later evening the score at 3 with his second homer in the third inning. Nicknamed “Big Maple,” this 6-foot-5, 231-pound Canadian has tallied 18 homers in his last 32 games, including six in his last eight.

Oklahoma’s hitters have been exceptional, accounting for 45 of their 93 home runs in their last 17 games. They have excelled in the current NCAA Tournament, smashing 28 homers in 11 games, and setting a record with 10 home runs across four College World Series games—the highest since the event’s relocation to Charles Schwab Field in 2011.

Cord Rager began with a challenging first inning, conceding three runs, but managed to regain composure. Gavin Jones and LJ Mercurius provided bullpen support, with Mercurius securing the final 1 2/3 innings.

North Carolina’s Carter French made an outstanding defensive play in the third inning. As Jason Walk launched a drive to right field, French chased it and caught the ball despite his glove getting caught under the field’s padding. This skillful catch was proudly shown to the umpire to confirm the out.
