Serena Williams has shocked the tennis community with her decision to return to Wimbledon. At 44 years old, the tennis legend has accepted a wildcard to participate in the tournament.
The final women’s singles spot opened up following an earlier announcement, allowing Williams to seize the opportunity. Prior to this, she had secured a wild card for the doubles competition alongside her sister, Venus Williams.
Recently, Williams hinted at a potential singles return, and now it is becoming a reality. In a statement at SW19 reported by Yahoo Sports, she questioned, “You think I’m ready for singles? I need to get to work.” Serena’s career at Wimbledon is storied, with seven women’s singles titles. However, she remains one Grand Slam victory away from matching Margaret Court’s record of 24. Currently, Serena holds 23 Grand Slam titles.
Williams last claimed a women’s singles match win in 2019, against Simona Halep from Romania at Wimbledon. Since coming back to the sport after a four-year hiatus, she has participated in only two doubles matches.
Her career achievements include winning each Grand Slam tournament—the Australian Open, French Open, and U.S. Open—at least three times. Alongside her sister, she has also achieved the career “Golden Slam” in both singles and doubles events.
Globally, she remains the most recognizable female tennis player. Her fans are eager to see her performance in this year’s competition.
At Wimbledon in 2022, Serena expressed uncertainty about whether it would be her last appearance at the tournament. She remarked, “Who knows where I’ll pop up?”
Known for her prowess on grass, Serena has an impressive record of 107 wins in 123 singles matches on this surface. This experience could benefit her as she makes her comeback.
The draw for Serena’s first-round opponent will be revealed this Friday, with the tournament commencing on June 29.
