A tragic event unfolded in Montreal on June 22, 2026, when a suspect armed with a long gun opened fire at a hotel, resulting in the death of a police officer. The incident occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, and officers returned fire, killing the suspect. Tragically, a civilian also lost their life, but it remains unclear who fired the fatal shot.
Police Chief Fady Dagher revealed that another officer was seriously injured but is currently in stable condition. This marks a significant moment for Montreal’s police force, as it is the first time an officer has been killed in the line of duty in 24 years. Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34, who had joined the force in 2021, was identified as the deceased officer.
The shooting initiated after emergency services received a call around 11:35 a.m. about a person brandishing a gun from a window at the Hilton hotel. Upon their arrival, police were met with gunfire, and video evidence showed the shooter outside the hotel. Authorities are investigating the suspect’s motive, and police are unsure who fired the shot that killed the civilian.
Eyewitness accounts describe the chaotic scene. Jacob Coutu, a construction worker nearby, recalled hearing “four or five gunshots” in the morning before police swarmed the area, followed by additional gunfire. He estimated hearing between 30 and 40 shots during the exchange.
The situation prompted public safety officials to issue an emergency alert, advising residents to take shelter. This led to temporary closures of the Décarie expressway and sections of two subway lines. Quebec Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière refrained from speculating on the suspect’s identity or motives, deferring to an independent police watchdog to investigate further. However, he stated that consultations with multiple agencies determined the incident was not a terrorist attack.
Minister Lafrenière urged the public to refrain from sharing videos of the altercation and expressed concern for the victim’s families. Meanwhile, in British Columbia, police forces were notified of potential calls for violence against officers following the “tragic events” in Montreal. This warning came from an intelligence unit within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the province.
