Controversy Surrounds Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Rehabilitation

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become a contentious issue as President Donald Trump announced the arrest of six individuals related to recent damage. The extensive rehabilitation project, valued at over $14 million, has stirred debates on law enforcement, aesthetic concern, and environmental issues. Trump’s statement indicated a ‘350-foot gash’ in the paint, a claim lacking supporting evidence, as his administration rushes to repair the botched renovation ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

Trump’s renovation plan aimed to enhance the century-old Reflecting Pool by draining its water and painting the bottom in a color termed ‘American flag blue.’ Since completion, the pool has suffered from algae blooms, and parts of the new coating appear to be peeling. Trump frequently attributes the peeling to vandalism, without presenting evidence. He asserted that the damage was purposefully inflicted, and seven other individuals were cited for damaging the pool.

National Guard members and Park Police have heightened patrols around the pool after Trump’s insistence that vandals caused liner damage. Additional fencing was erected around the pool. Trump intends to address the issue by draining part of the pool either before or after the July 4 celebrations to conduct repairs, although the details of these repairs remain unspecified.

Atlantic Industrial Coatings, involved in the rehabilitation project, acknowledged minor repair needs but maintained these do not constitute a failure of the liner. Repairs are expected as part of the warranty once the pool is drained.

An environmental concern surfaced following the discovery of a Mallard duckling carcass floating in the algae-riddled water. The Center for Biological Diversity urged an investigation into possible violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The controversy has grown, as some view the algae problem as a direct result of the dark liner absorbing more sunlight and promoting algae growth.

Despite the original intentions to restore the site, algae blooms have clouded the ‘American flag blue’ coating, contradicting Trump’s promise of a restored, gleaming pool. Observations report pieces of liner floating in the water, prompting workers to use hydrogen peroxide to mitigate the algae, risking further damage to the paint. Experts suggest the darker liner might exacerbate the algae issue by raising water temperatures.
