Billionaire Bill Gates recently spoke to the House Oversight Committee about his interactions with the late Jeffrey Epstein. According to the transcript released on Tuesday, Gates suspected that Epstein might have considered blackmailing him due to Gates’ extramarital affairs.
During the interview on June 10, Gates stated, “He never blackmailed me, but looking at these emails, it raises a serious probability that he contemplated blackmailing me.” This was part of an investigation into Epstein, a convicted sex offender, by the committee.
In a February meeting with foundation members, Gates acknowledged two affairs and described his time with Epstein as a “huge mistake.” He expressed regret at a staff town hall after the release of emails between him and Epstein, insisting he did nothing improper or unlawful.
Gates also admitted to being aware of Epstein’s criminal conviction involving sexual offenses during their meetings. He felt he “probably should have” investigated further into Epstein’s criminal background. Epstein had pled guilty in 2008 to charges in Florida, which required him to register as a sex offender.
Gates, who started interactions with Epstein in 2011, clarified to lawmakers that while they exchanged emails and had several encounters, Epstein never introduced him to any young women. Gates is not implicated in any of Epstein’s criminal activities.
“I appreciated the opportunity to meet with the House Oversight Committee today and to answer all of their questions,” Gates stated after his testimony. “I support the release of all the files and hope my participation contributes to getting justice for the victims.”
The committee also revealed the transcript of a June 9 interview with Lesley Groff, Epstein’s longtime secretary. She informed the lawmakers that she never observed any illegal activities during her 18-year tenure with Epstein.
