Washington, D.C. authorities have erected fencing around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Officials describe this as a preventive security action ahead of the July 4 holiday.
This decision follows concerns raised by President Donald Trump, who cited vandalism as a reason for ongoing problems at the pool. These issues emerged just days after a $14-million refurbishment, with returning algae and peeling blue lining noted.
The Trump administration reports six arrests related to incidents at the pool, with 17 police reports filed. The Department of the Interior explains this initiative as part of a broader strategy to protect the landmark, given heightened concerns about its maintenance.
In a statement to The Hill, the department emphasized that the barrier is intended to safeguard the pool. “With increased vandalism by leftist activists, the fencing is being installed earlier than planned to prevent further damage to this historic site,” they stated.
While officials have not disclosed specific incidents prompting these measures, they affirm that protection efforts have intensified as the number of visitors rise.
