With the rise in global temperatures, heat waves are more frequent and severe, posing risks like heat-related illnesses. Here is expert advice on how to stay cool, even without air conditioning.

Keep Cool Without Air Conditioning

To avoid discomfort or illness from severe heat, consider these methods:

  • Mist your skin with cool or room-temperature water to cool down.
  • Block windows that receive afternoon sun with blankets or darker sheets to minimize heat.
  • If lacking air conditioning, open windows at night and use fans to circulate air.
  • Dab your forehead with a cool cloth when feeling warm.
  • Refrain from strenuous outdoor exercise if possible.
  • Add ice cubes to your water, especially outdoors, to stay hydrated.
  • Try to avoid using your stove or oven to prevent adding extra heat to your home.

Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion can manifest in adults through symptoms like heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, fast weak pulse, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, or fainting. Respond by sipping water, moving to a cooler area, relaxing clothing, or placing cool, wet cloths on the body. Seek medical help if vomiting or if symptoms do not improve within an hour.

Recognize the Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is more serious, with signs including high body temperature (103°F or higher), hot/red/dry skin, strong pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. Individuals may appear less coordinated or confused. If these symptoms appear, call emergency services immediately and attempt to lower the person’s temperature with cool cloths or a bath.
