President Donald Trump announced the nomination of Lance Schroyer as the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Schroyer is a former Oklahoma state trooper and a U.S. Marine. Trump praised him on Truth Social, highlighting his extensive operational experience and leadership capabilities.
Schroyer shares his home state with recently appointed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Mullin, a former congressman, introduced Schroyer at a National Sheriffs’ Association event, acknowledging him as a “good friend” and emphasizing his long career in enforcement.
Mullin expressed support for Schroyer’s nomination, citing his 29-year career and collaboration with federal and state bodies on immigration enforcement. “President Trump made a great pick,” Mullin said, promoting Schroyer’s potential to lead ICE effectively.
If confirmed, Schroyer will steer ICE during tense times. Trump’s immigration policies have led to increased federal raids in American cities, intensifying confrontations and resulting in fatalities. Under Trump’s administration, ICE received a $75 billion boost, allowing for significant expansion.
Despite Mullin’s softer public stance on immigration, he aligns with Trump’s priorities on deportation. Mullin aims for less media attention on his department while maintaining the president’s objectives.
Claire Trickler-McNulty, an ex-ICE official, notes that past ICE directors often had legal backgrounds. Schroyer’s Oklahoma roots suggest Mullin’s influence in the selection. John Torres, a senior ICE official, believes Schroyer’s state and local experience might favor his Senate confirmation.
Schroyer’s nomination follows Todd Lyons’s resignation as ICE director. David Venturella, from a private prison company, is the current acting director until the Senate confirms Schroyer.
ICE has seen a lack of Senate-confirmed directors since the Obama era, largely due to the contentious political landscape surrounding immigration.
