States Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary Amid Political Divisions

2 days ago 0

As partisan tensions impact celebrations in Washington, states across the US are focusing on their own history and stories. This diverse approach includes red and blue states engaging with complex histories.

A mobile history museum in Arizona, organized by the state’s 250th commission, showcases both state and national history. It includes a replica of the Liberty Bell, offering visitors a deeper understanding of historical events.

In 2023, during his campaign, President Trump promised a yearlong celebration for the 250th anniversary of the US. Now back in office, he has organized a military parade, an Ultimate Fighting Championship event on the White House lawn, and recently opened the 16-day Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington.

Recently, this fair has been mired in political controversy, with critics accusing Trump of using the anniversary for political purposes. However, in various states, planners have been quietly preparing celebrations with limited budgets, emphasizing their unique contributions to the country’s history.

Festivals, parades, rodeos, and potlucks will take place. States are focusing on how they fit into the broader national story. This is especially significant for states formed after the original 13 colonies, as they explore their connection to 1776 amid cultural and historical debates.

President Trump’s emphasis on what he calls ‘patriotic’ history has sparked debate over historical interpretation. Yet, there is optimism that the 250th anniversary could foster diverse local celebrations, much like the 1976 Bicentennial did.

John Dichtl, head of the American Association for State and Local History, expressed optimism about diverse celebrations. He believes they will highlight contrasts with political dysfunction in Washington, offering a chance for communities to shine.
