Minneapolis Mayor Offers Support to Somali Community Amid Investigations

2 days ago 0

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed members of the city’s Somali community, expressing solidarity and acknowledging their contributions. His comments came during celebrations for Somali Independence Day. Frey emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “you’re coming for all of us” when targeting some community members.

The mayor praised the Somali community as “our family,” highlighting their role in enhancing the city. He reinforced that they are valued as brothers and sisters, not merely as immigrants.

Frey’s remarks also alluded to Operation Metro Surge, a Trump administration initiative. This operation ended in February and led to over 4,000 arrests in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, claiming to decrease public safety threats.

In a post on X, Frey celebrated Somali Independence Day, recognizing the resilience, culture, and leadership of Minnesota’s Somali community. The state hosts one of the largest Somali populations in the U.S.

Meanwhile, Minnesota faces scrutiny due to allegations of widespread fraud in state social services. A House Oversight Committee report accused Governor Tim Walz’s administration of ignoring warning signs, leading to significant financial losses, including roughly $300 million in federal child nutrition funds during the pandemic.

More than 110 individuals, some part of the Somali immigrant community, have faced charges related to various fraud schemes. The report suggested that concerns over racial discrimination claims delayed addressing fraud issues.

The Walz administration has disputed these findings, denying negligence in managing the state’s social services programs.
