Rescuers converged around a newborn wearing a diaper, wrapped in a striped blanket. This moment, captured in a video, has become a symbol of hope for families awaiting news of missing loved ones after recent major earthquakes in Venezuela.
The Associated Press released footage showing the rescue of 18-day-old Juan David and his mother, Dayana Patino, from the debris after a 32-hour ordeal in La Guaira, a coastal region. This footage gained international attention this week.
“You are tough, Mami, you are tough,” a voice encouragingly tells Patino in Spanish, while she remains trapped.
Images captured post-rescue show baby Juan David and his mother under distressing circumstances.
In an interview with BBC News from a hospital bed in Caracas, Patino recounted the harrowing experience. She had been washing dishes in her eighth-floor apartment when the earthquakes hit. “I don’t know how I held onto my baby, because I was flying,” she narrated, describing how she was pinned against furniture. Patino believes her determination to protect her child kept her alive. “As long as he was alive, I was going to be alive,” she stated.
The footage of mother and child undergoing medical treatment underscores their fortunate survival.
The earthquakes, which struck on Wednesday, caused widespread devastation in Venezuela. Official reports indicate at least 1,719 fatalities, with the number of missing people still rising. On Tuesday, optimism waned about finding more survivors. On Monday, the United Nations had entered an agreement with Venezuelan authorities to supply 10,000 body bags as anticipation grows that the death toll may rise. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher considers an initial estimate of 50,000 missing as highly plausible.
The U.N. also reports more than 5,000 injuries and 12,000 people displaced by the disaster.
Interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, indicated that rescue efforts continue. “Efforts to rescue survivors, which fills us with emotion and hope for their families and for our people,” Rodríguez remarked.
International rescue teams have been arriving in Venezuela, intensifying search operations. Despite surpassing the critical 72-hour period for finding survivors trapped under rubble, efforts persist.
